I was recently asked for advice from a young girl on how to lose weight fast, specifically 40lbs in under a month. She was already at a healthy weight, perhaps even underweight for her height. This is what I told her:
“Make a list of all the reasons you want to lose weight. Write down a list of your goals and the things you want to change. Now destroy both lists.
Take a new sheet of paper and write down everything you love about yourself, and your life. Write down everything that makes you happy.
Decorate this list, frame it, whatever, and put it somewhere where you will see it every day, and let it remind you that you are beautiful and perfect and strong enough to make it through the day.
Live your life, find hobbies, make new friends, catch up with old friends. Smile, laugh, cry, and laugh harder because life is a funny thing. You won’t be happy just because you get thinner, you will only be ill.
Skinny does not equal happy, it won’t make your life any better. It will only make you cold, dizzy, unhappy and very very ill, your organs can fail, your heart can fail, you can end up with chronic illnesses that last for the rest of your life. It’s not worth it. Life is too short to be wasting time being unhappy, be that with yourself or with anything else.
So my advice to you is to look to the future and see happiness that doesn’t come from being emancipated and frail, but from love and friends and family, and most importantly, YOU.”
Eating disorders are becoming all too common, and are among the deadliest of all mental illnesses. It’s not necessarily always about losing weight, but sometimes about control, about self-worth and a coping mechanism. If you or someone you know suffers from an eating disorder, please seek help from a doctor. Recovery is possible.
Lots of love,
